MUNICIPAL WATER BACKUP SYSTEMS
A GOOD FEATURE: Our Municipal Water Backup System is not plumbed “In-Line” but “Parallel” which means that it does NOT do away with the municipal water/pressure BUT supplements low municipal pressure and/or replaces it when there is a complete water outage. Parts of the system require electricity to work: the Booster Pump, UV Sterilisation Unit (If you have chosen this option).
The Parallel Municipal Water Backup System will use stored water in the tank to supplement low/no water pressure either from the municipal mains or if the sensors in the Pump detect low pressure from your home/office side. If your tank isn’t too big, this should be sufficient to circulate the water within your tank and replenish with fresh municipal water. The tank will refill automatically if/when normal water supply is restored from the municipality.

Note: It is recommended to circulate the tank water with fresh water on regular basis to prevent the water from becoming stagnant.
If there has not been any water outages for a lengthy period, or not much water usage within your home/office then it is advisable to circulate/use the water in the tank in the following manner. Using the Bypass Control Setup do the following: Turn the following “Mains In”, “Return” levers OFF, and open the “Bypass” lever. Your backup system/pump will then kick-in/work and begin to use the water within the tank – when you open a tap/shower/water point within your home.
Debris in Municipal Water: You will have noticed sand, particle debris in your municipal water. Often clogging up tap filters, blocking shower heads/roses or cistern inlet valves. This debris can also jam into the Water Backup System’s Non-Return Valve and prevent it from functioning properly – causing your pump to continuously work!
Although not necessary, it is advisable to install at point-of-entry an In-line/Spin Down Filter this catch this grit. Speak to us about installing one. Note: These spin down filters do not stop, silt, mud, bacteria only certain size particles from entering the water system. They also need to be checked regularly and cleaned.
Mosquito Mesh/Filters & Brass Tank Tap: Unless specifically asked for, it is the client’s responsibility to fit these.
GOOD TO KNOW – Water Usage per Adults in South Africa: ±150-235/L/day. Keep this in mind during water outages.

PRESSURE BOOSTER PUMPS:

General Information:
These require electricity to work.
ADDED BENEFIT: The water pump will also help to boost/balance water pressure within your home or office – especially when more than one water point/tap is opened simultaneously. Depending on the type of pump this feature will be to a lesser or greater degree.
NOT EQUAL: Many factors need to be considered when selecting a Booster Pump: * Water consumption * Pressure requirements * Inverter/Solar system compatible
It is important to have a constant/stable supply of electricity! Single phase 220-240V. Note: Load shedding, electrical surges/spikes will cause damage to electronic components. See below.
In the event of load shedding/power outages your Pressure Booster Pump may need to be reset! We can do this for you, but a callout fee will be charged.
Warning: Must be attached to a firm level base. The pump must never run dry! It must always be covered by the pump housing.

WARRANTIES

A)Workmanship: General workmanship 12 months guarantee. Plumbing guarantee see Section E.

B)Component warranties: As specified by manufacturers of individual components.
It is the client’s responsibility to effect necessary actions/registrations, etc. to ensure that warranties offered by product manufacturers/suppliers are activated. (i.e. Water Tank, Booster Pump Filtration & UV units supply/manufacturing companies). We will provide assistance if requested.

C) Electrical Products: Due to the sensitive nature of electrical products, consumables such as bulbs, transformers and ballasts do not carry a warranty. It is recommended that you install professional surge protector/s to avoid premature failure of these items. Especially considering the unreliable, erratic and fluctuating supply of electricity from the national grid.

D) Load Shedding: Will damage even the best electronic products on the market, eventually leaving them damaged beyond repair. The reason for this is not the loss of power, but the surge of current and voltage spikes when the electricity is switched on again. Single-phase power in the average home runs on 230 V. Therefore, when the lights come on again, all the appliances in that particular suburb suddenly get a surge and voltage spike much more powerful than 230 V. This only lasts for a microsecond, but it is enough to damage electrical equipment, from your television, lights, etc.
A warranty does not cover malicious damage to the system, and it does not cover surges and voltage spikes.
Surge protectors, professionally and correctly installed, have therefore become a vital necessities in an environment with load shedding.
Note: Surge protectors don’t last forever either and, while they will protect the electronic equipment you use every day, they will also eventually need to be replaced.

E) Municipal Water Outages & Fluctuating Municipal Water Pressure: NOTE: Unfortunately the Water Problem is not stable and as the local Municipal Infrastructures steadily deteriorates, so we are finding different problems coming to the fore than previously.  This means new solutions and alterations may need to occur to existing systems in order for them to cope with new challenges. GENERALLY SPEAKING: Much  like electrical outages, it is generally the SURGE when the service is returned, and/or dramatic fluctuations in water pressure that can cause problems/damage to your system. These extreme fluctuations in pressure “SURGES” also cause water “KNOCKs” & “HAMMERING” on the system and can damage components. These incidences are NOT covered by the warranty. It is the local Municipality’s responsibility to provide constant even water pressure. However, it is NOT “business as usual”. Generally what are the symptoms of this problem: • Leaking pipes, joints, fitting on mostly the Mains incoming side • The booster pump can be damaged by very high incoming pressure and in some cases will stop working. Generally, most homes have a PRV (Pressure Regulating Valve) fitted before the plumbing/water enters your home/office. These PRV valves generally protect your plumbing system and  components (Geysers, Washing Machines, etc) from pressure issues by BALANCING the water pressure. They are generally 400Kpa (4 Bars), which is most often the recommended pressure. Our systems are installed BEFORE this PRV and therefore do not get the PROTECTION of this valve. We only know what your incoming municipal pressure is when we install your Pressure Booster Pump, as some pumps can measure INCOMING and OUTGOING pressure. Remember the incoming pressure can FLUCTUATE dramatically. Our WORKMANSHIP, generally if there is a problem with our workmanship you would know immediately, especially regards plumbing/leaks, etc. If there has been NO LEAKS for more than 30 days, we can safely say that the problem has been caused by OTHER FACTORS out of our control and we CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE! WE would suggest installing a component before your Water Backup System to protect it. If installed before your system a Pressure Regulating Valve can help regulate pressure and protect your system from most of these pressure problems.

F) Earthing/Overload Protection: It is the client’s responsibility to ensure that the electrical circuit we use to draw power from for the Pump, UV sterilisation unit is electrically compliant (i.e. Adequate, Earthed, Overload protection, etc.). We do not supply an electrical COC.
Insurance: The onus is on the client to ensure all requirements are met for insurance purposes if necessary.

G) Tank Base: Water is heavy, every 1000L weighs 1 metric ton = 1000kg. So, a good, firm, compacted, level base is essential. We recommend a concrete base on a compacted surface. Note: We cannot be held liable for the subsiding of ground beneath the water tank.

H) FILTRATION & UV STERILISATION:
Note: We only use/install quality industry standard/accepted components and systems.
Recommended: In order to have a benchmark of the condition of your municipal water quality beforehand, we recommend that you have a sample analysed at a water laboratory. Then, analyse again once your filtration & UV System is up and running.

I) 3x Stage Particle Filtration: Does not need electricity to operate.
If installed at “Point of Entry” this type of treatment provides filtered water to every faucet and water source in the house/office. Filtering water through a “whole house water filter” eliminates the risks of both drinking and showering in contaminated water. Some Advantages:
• Supplies pre-filtered water throughout home/office
• Reducing chlorine and chemicals in water supply.
• Removes sand, silt, slime, rust, mud and other suspended solids.
Will need replacing every ±6-12 months depending on usage and condition of water. Generally a drop in water pressure will indicate that it is time to change the cartridges. Prolonged use of blocked/dirty cartridges will put strain on the motor and could cause serious damage. It is possible to fit pressure gauges before and after the filtration system, which will help to monitor condition of the filter cartridges.
Note: The water may be a little milky or cloudy for a short while with a new system or when the cartridges are replaced. Generally this is caused by tiny air bubbles in the water. It is best to let your water run a little till it clears. UV Sterilisation: Requires electricity to operate.

Helps remove harmful bacteria and viruses in your municipal water.
Typically recommended Bulb Change – Every 12 Months, to ensure optimal functioning.
Note: Always ensure unit is sealed against weather/rain. Consists of sensitive electrical parts, bulbs, see warranties section.

J) PLUMBING:  Will always be a “Parallel” system, will always have a Non-Return Valve, will always have a complete BYPASS – UNLESS otherwise asked for or specified.
Plumbing materials, components and types of piping may vary depending on specific packages (i.e. Copper, uPVC, Galvanised, HDPE)
Plumbing Care: It is the clients responsibility to ensure plumbing is not damaged. Painting is excluded. But, recommended to prevent damage from: Weather, UV light, Oxidation. Plumbing guarantee see Section E.

K) COMPONENTS SUPPLIED BY CLIENT:  With regards to components supplied by the Client (Either new or used, such as: Booster Pumps, Filtration & UV Units, Valves, Electrical points, and all other related components). We will assume them to be in good working order, we cannot under any circumstance be held liable for their condition and operating functionality, whether used in a new installation or corrections/improvements/alterations to an existing water backup system. Nor can we be responsible for any unforeseen results of their use.  Our Estimate/Quotation does not include any time/materials needed to assess/diagnose/repair faulty component/s. Time spent and materials used will be additionally charged. If the faulty component result in delays/setbacks additional charges may be due. Also, generally speaking we will not open/dismantle faulty components, the responsibility rests with the client to send for repairs.

L) DISCLAIMER: While every care will be taken, we cannot be held responsible should damage/harm occur to property/person during course of project. Note: Payment of the deposit constitutes acceptance of our estimate and our Terms & Conditions. Including that the client, and all users of the installed municipal water backup system, acknowledge/understand that they are using the Municipal Water Backup System and components completely at my their own risk. Furthermore, our company accepts no liability whatsoever for the safety, reliability, durability and performance of supplied and installed components. The client will be held responsible, should any harm/injury occur due to dogs on premises.

M) THIS WARRANTY IS VOID IF THE SYSTEM IS: Damaged due to negligence, abuse, misuse, accident, modification, tampering, alteration and/or acts of God. Used for commercial applications or rentals. Modified or repaired by anyone other than Happy Tradesmen. The extent of Happy Tradesmen, under this limited warranty is the repair or replacement of the component/product at the sole discretion of Happy Tradesmen.
